Ben Askren calls out ‘coward’ Jake Paul for going silent since publicly accepting boxing match

According to Ben Askren, a potential boxing match with YouTube star Jake Paul may have hit a roadblock.

After Askren accepted Paul’s challenge, rumors of a proposed March 28 date in Los Angeles started circulating. But since then, Askren says no advancement has been made, which makes the former ONE Championship and Bellator titleholder think that Paul might no longer be interested.

Askren took to Instagram on Sunday night to break down how everything has played out and blasted Paul for going quiet ever since he accepted publicly.

“I’m retired, coaching wrestling, doing some podcasts, buying some bitcoin, enjoying life,” Askren said. “I don’t really want to fight anybody. So November, this jabroni Jake Paul calls me out, puts up a poster with my name, haha. It’s kinda funny, whatever, no big deal. Well then, a couple weeks later, I get a couple of texts. Then a week after that I get some calls. Then I get an offer. OK, this guy really wants to fight.

“Am I opposed to making some easy money beating up a YouTuber? Of course I’m not. So what do I do? Sure, Jacob, I’ll fight you. No problem. I accept publicly on Twitter nonetheless. Since then, Jacob’s went silent. Jacob’s kind of a coward. Sorry guys, don’t think (the fight is gonna happen).

Paul did reference Askren in a spoof video that he posted last week, in which he also targeted Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz, Dillon Danis, Michael Bisping, and even UFC president Dana White.

Paul, a YouTuber-turned-professional boxer, has two fights against other celebrities on his resume, most recently knocking out former NBA star Nate Robinson last month in the co-main event of the Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. pay-per-view. Since then, Paul has aggressively called out McGregor but seemed to settle on Askren, with McGregor not being a realistic option.

Askren, 36, retired more than a year ago after a three-fight UFC stint ended with a 1-2 record on a technical submission loss to Demian Maia on Oct. 26, 2019.
